In this rare initial sketch of the + album cover the artist explores ideas as we see his process. This piece was made whilst Ed takes a break from recording. The vigorous lines capture the speed at which this drawing was made and reveal the inner workings of what will become the cover art for the album. Phillip chooses biro here, possibly continuing the theme of his Collaborations cover art. In my view, the symmetrical face and billowing hair is reminiscent with Da Vinci’s masterpiece The Vitruvian Man – which connects Phillip to the old masters he has diligently studied throughout his career.
